It's an insider joke at this point, and yet, I have seen more people experimenting with Linux lately than ever before. It seems like every time I turn around, the people I least expect to be interested in Linux are downloading it to give it a try. Whether they're trying to keep old hardware running longer (Linux can be configured to use far fewer resources than Windows or macOS) or feeling fed up with the Windows upgrade cycle , Linux seems to be on everyone's mind lately. I've been using Linux ever since I installed it on an old laptop back in 2008 (Ubuntu 8.10, which I installed to test for a WIRED review, naturally), and I'm here to say that there's never been a better time to buy a Linux laptop.
